In an August 3, 2026 consumer alert, the Federal Trade Commission said refund and recovery scammers may use lists of people who have already been scammed, then contact them offering to recover money, a prize or merchandise.

The agency says these callers may claim to work for a government agency, consumer group or law firm before asking for a fee or financial information. The FTC says sharing the information can put a person’s money or identity at risk.

The FTC advises consumers not to pay someone who unexpectedly offers to recover money for a fee. If someone claims to be from a government agency, look up its contact details independently and do not rely on a number provided by the caller.
