In an August 20, 2026 consumer alert, the Federal Trade Commission said a package you did not order could be part of a brushing scam, in which a seller uses the recipient’s name to post a fake review connected to the delivery.
The agency says an unexpected package can also be a sign that someone has, or is trying to get, your personal information. It advises consumers to change passwords on online shopping accounts if they may have been compromised.
The FTC says you do not have to pay for unordered items. If you suspect a brushing scam, the agency says to report it through ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
